outdoor lighting solutions?

I need to light a large area as energy efficiently as possible. I have two patio areas and a large parking lot that need lights but I don't know how much that translates in lumens. I have one old halogen security light that is in a horrible location but lights very well and I want to know what kind of power it draws. Right now I am using floodlights from my house and I know those are just burning electricity.

A Halogen floodlight is typically 500 Watts.

This sort of lighting tends to be use to floodlight buildings here. They are easy on the eye too; Don't know how the purchase cost stacks up.
